TOMMY KITE TOLD me that in a tournament one year at Harbour Town, he hit his second shot into the rear fringe of the green, a few feet beyond the putting surface.

Tommy reached back and his caddie, Mike Carrick, handed him the club he wanted to use for the chip shot, an 8-iron.

After carefully studying the chip, Tommy, who is one of the best chippers in the history of the game, drew back his club and chili-dipped the shot, moving the ball three feet.

Stunned, Tommy turned and stared at Mike.

“Well, I still believe that’s the right club,” Mike said.

Tommy laughed. These words of wisdom from his caddie and old friend put Tommy’s mind back to the job at hand.

He took his stance again with the 8-iron and chipped the ball into the hole for a par.
